Proof of Concept (POC) by recovering cellulose fibers from waste siliconized glassine liner

Technology Readiness Level (TRL): towards TRL 5-7


In South East Asia (SEA), waste siliconized glassine liner from label packaging value chain was mostly disposed by landfill method. There is a rise of needing more landfill sites in the region and pollution problems (Leachate) drastically happening in the landfill sites. Waste siliconized glassine liner was upcycled to divert the valuable waste from ending up in landfill sites.

Based on the fact that cellulose fibers from collected waste paper stream can only be recycled up to 6 to 7 times only. Hence, after multiple rounds of recycling process, the fibers become too short and fragile for making papers and it is usually ended up by landfill method. Paper sludge waste was upcycled into Calcite and this initiative diverts the valuable waste from ending up in landfill sites.

Examples like Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR) are commonly use in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Industry, Logistics & Shipping Industry and Oil Industrial Chemical Industry. The PET base film works as a functional carrier component in TTR application. Wishing to limit the environmental impact, a robust solution was made to recover the PET film from TTR packaging waste stream and this initiative diverts the valuable waste from ending up in landfill sites.
